Frequently Asked Questions
HoseTechniques, Silicone Vacuum Hose and HoseTechniques Silicone Vacuum Hose respectively.
You can choose a Universal Kit, or you can design your own kit. Also, you can use our submission form to make a kit suggestion.
If you get one of our kits which is custom-designed for your specific car, this is not an issue. HoseTechniques' kits are designed to eliminate the guesswork for you. Otherwise, as people used to say, this is the "Sixty Four Thousand Dollar Question"! How much hose do I need for installation? is difficult to answer because each and every car is different and each owner has different requirements. But don’t give up. Here are three solutions to help you decide on what to get:
1) What you need to figure out is the total length you need in each hose size. To see which sizes of our hoses you'll need, use a micrometer tool to measure (in millimeters) the outside diameters (O.D.) of the pipes which your old hoses are attached to. That O.D. will be the mm size you need for our hose I.D. size. Add up total length of that one size and repeat the process with each hose that needs replacing. (Be slightly generous with your lengths so that you do not get too little amount of hose and come up short. This is probably the only time you will have to measure for hose because HT Super Silicone is an excellent long-lasting replacement and carries a lifetime warranty against manufacturer’s defects.)
2) Or, order on-line the HT Sample Pak which contains all 6 metric sizes and all current colors. With this method you won't have to measure the pipes since each Sample Pak comes with a printed size gauge so that you can easily figure out the sizes you need during this test-fitting on your vehicle. Just use a sample hose included in the Sample Pak to test fit on your engine, then check the test hose size on the gauge. As noted above, add up total length of each size you need. Repeat with each size.
3) If you don't want to do either of the above, you can order our Universal Starter kit. With this kit, you will have enough for a basic installation and your engine will look marvelous. You can add more hose later if you expand your installation.
High performance cars using aftermarket high performance parts will benefit by replacing all OEM vacuum hoses with silicone vacuum hoses. Review our HT specs for more information. Use the measuring techniques in the paragraph above.
Show cars that compete in contests benefit greatly when they use HT vacuum hose in colors for the complete look. When modifying or re-modifying their show cars, we've had people choose one of our hose colors first, then match their car’s color theme to one of HT hose colors rather than the other way around. We have 9 colors in 6 convenient metric sizes. Again, use the measuring techniques above.
It's in the name! The Universal Starter Kit is designed to "get you started" replacing the vacuum hose in your engine. We realize that most people do not know how much vacuum hose they need, so we designed a Universal Starter Kit (with 35 total feet) to solve that problem. The Starter Kit has plenty of hose in it (four different sizes of hose, see catalog description for individual lengths) which may be all that you need for your vehicle. For 95% of all applications (meaning most popular vehicles), you will be able to replace all your vacuum hose, your windshield washer hose, and you'll also have enough to slip over your hood hold-up rod. Remember you can always order extra hose by-the-foot if you need more. See the on-line catalog for pricing. The Universal Show Kit is designed for Show Cars (again, it's all in the name!), those entering car shows who want to go all-out dressing up their engine, above and beyond simply replacing standard vacuum hose. With the Show Kit (containing 70 feet), you can of course replace all your vacuum hose, windshield washer lines and hood hold-up rod, then you can also use the additional hose to "Slit 'n' Cover" for many parts of your engine, such as throttle cable, battery cable, cruise control cable and wiring harness. Even use in conjunction with stereo wiring. Usually wherever you have split loom (also called wire loom), you can also use HT•SVH. It's a very easy process -- all you have to do is use the HoseTechniques SuperSlitter™ to slit the appropriate size hose for whatever you want to cover, then place the hose on (turning the slit side down) and tie wrap the hose into place. By using HT•SVH in this way, you will have "covers" in the same silicone material as you have vacuum hose. Your engine will look uniform instead of having various materials throughout your installation. Not only that, you can also be sure all the colors will match! Both Universal SVH Kits also include color-matched tie wraps, trimming tools, decals, installation guide, and for a limited time, the UPS ground freight (48 states only) is included in the price.
Absolutely! During an installation, if your engine is not clean (oily dirt), you will be constantly wiping your hands and the hose as you go along. This will take you longer to do the install and will be depressing!
HoseTechniques SVH is very easy to maintain. Just do an occasional quick wipe-down with standard rubbing alcohol for a clean finish. Keep the alcohol away from any painted surfaces by applying the alcohol to a lint-free cloth and then using that cloth only on the silicone hose that you need to clean.
This is a common problem, especially with older cars. A rough-running engine may be due to the ECU trying to compensate for the surging idle speed caused by a loose or cracked (split) vacuum hose. Original rubber vacuum hoses age and eventually crack causing leaks. That is a natural course of events and the rubber hoses have to be replaced, either with more (new) rubber hoses or you can change over to silicone hoses. Carefully inspect all your original vacuum hoses for brittleness and cracking. Replace any suspect hose with HT•SVH to solve the problem. OEM vacuum hose leaking problems might be inadvertently or easily overlooked by a mechanic as they check for more complicated engine problems. A simple hose replacement of Silicone Hose may save you more costly repair money. It's worth a try and will enhance the look of your engine at the same time. All SVH hoses have a Limited Lifetime Warranty from HoseTechniques.
ID is Inside Diameter and OD is Outside Diameter. You will also see it abbreviated as I.D. and O.D.
No. Our silicone hoses are primarily designed as direct replacements for your stock/OEM hoses (usually rubber) to increase reliability and improve appearance. But we do include with every kit a SuperSlitter™ which you can use to slit our hose and make a cover to place over your throttle cable, for example.
We use nylon for high heat-resistance. Our Tie Wraps are color-matched to our hoses.
